2025 ICIS Honorary Lifetime Membership Award

Beyond his significant career-long contributions to translational immunology, Ulf Panzer, MD was bestowed Honorary Lifetime Membership for his generosity in promoting careers of his lab members and engaging in public outreach. He has been an enthusiastic participant and speaker in the Cytokine meetings and has encouraged his lab members to participate as well. Dr. Panzer’s research is characterized by high originality and quality and exceptional translational impact. He has identified key mechanisms in GN & vasculitis, using preclinical models and patient tissue samples, addressing a topic that was long-overlooked in the Th17 field.

Dr. Panzer established a Collaborative Research Center to dissect immune-mediated kidney diseases at the molecular, cellular, systemic & individual level, ultimately bridging the translational gap between experimental studies and improved patient outcomes, as well as to train the next generation of clinician and medical scientists in translational (kidney) immunology.

Ulf Panzer studied medicine and molecular biology in Hamburg and worked as a physician at the University Medical Center in Hamburg-Eppendorf (UKE) and received post-doctoral training as an immunologist at the Institute for Research in Biomedicine in Bellinzona, Switzerland. Since 2010 he is Professor of Medicine and Division Chief of Translational Immunology in Hamburg. In 2020, he established the Hamburg Center for Translational Immunology (HCTI) allowing for interdisciplinary approaches to tackle research questions in immunology and inflammation research. Dr. Panzer is the inspiring force behind this exciting interdisciplinary research HUB for translational immunology which will bring together basic and clinical scientists in this space. He remains director of the Collaborative Research Centre.

Dr. Panzer’s current research interests focus on the translation of basic immunological discoveries into novel therapeutics approaches in autoimmune kidney diseases. He serves on many advisory, editorial boards and scientific academies, and organized national and international meeting e.g. the International Society of Nephrology.
