Ruby Dawson, PhD

Dr Ruby Dawson is an ECR Postdoc at the Hudson Institute of Medical Research in the Cancer and Immune Signalling Laboratory with Prof. Brendan Jenkins. Her research investigates genetic causes of gastric cancer with a focus on genes of the innate immune system. In particular, she is interested in the roles of pattern recognition receptors and DNA sensors in Helicobacter-induced gastritis which precedes gastric cancer. Ruby completed her PhD at the University of Adelaide in 2019 where she investigated focal epilepsy, focusing on the role of the mTORC1 suppressor complex, GATOR1. Her use of CRISPR/CAS9 in mouse and cell models allowed her to develop specialised skills and interest with this technology.
Ruby is passionate about diversity and equality in scientific research and advocates for representation and equal opportunity for all races, ages and genders in science at all levels. In addition to presenting her research at national and international conferences, she has attended numerous seminars specific to women in STEM, which have an emphasis on promoting female mentorship and collaboration. As a new parent, she is also passionate about the importance of support and community with other mothers working in academia while balancing family life.
