@IolandaMiceli

Iolanda Miceli is a MD-PhD student in the Rheumatology Research Laboratory of Dr Sarah Jones at Monash University, Melbourne, Australia. She is concurrently completing her medical and scientific training through the MD-PhD program at Monash University. Through her medical training, Iolanda developed a strong interest in autoimmune disease which led her to pursue a translationally focused PhD on the development of safer therapies for patients with autoimmune disease. Her PhD investigates the glucocorticoid-induced leucine zipper, GILZ, which is a major mediator of the anti-inflammatory effects of glucocorticoids but is independent of the metabolic adverse effects of glucocorticoids. The Jones lab discovered a novel E3 ligase of GILZ, deletion of which restores GILZ and suppresses multiple cytokine pathways. This therapeutic strategy has since resulted in the formation of the biotech company GILZ Rx, which aims to develop compounds to therapeutically inhibit E3-X and reduce reliance on glucocorticoids in the future.
