Edward Chuong is an Assistant Professor at the University of Colorado Boulder. He received his Ph.D. in Genetics from Stanford University as an NSF Graduate Research Fellow. There he discovered that many gene regulatory elements active in the placenta are derived from endogenous retroviruses, which originate from ancient viral infections. He continued to study these elements as an HHMI Jane Coffin Childs Fellow at the University of Utah, where he discovered that some endogenous retroviruses have been evolutionarily domesticated to regulate critical antiviral genes during the interferon response. The Chuong lab was established in 2018 at the University of Colorado Boulder and uses state-of-the-art computational and experimental approaches to study the evolution of gene regulatory networks underlying mammalian immune responses. The major focuses of the lab are understanding how endogenous retroviruses and other genetic parasites shape intra- and inter-species functional variation in cytokine signaling networks. Dr. Chuong has been recognized for his research through several awards including being recognized as a Boettcher Investigator, Kavli Fellow, Sloan Fellow, and Packard Fellow.
